Research, Interviews & Early Insights

This week we deepened our understanding of “socially invisible teenagers,” focusing on what happens to them during unstructured free time. Through academic research, interviews with an education professional, and conversations with a socially invisible teen, we learned that these teens are often overlooked because they are quiet and non-disruptive, making late identification common. Recess and after-school hours emerged as the most difficult times, when many withdraw, rely heavily on their phones, and lack any structured social framework. Our research showed that meaningful connections rarely form in large classes but do emerge in small, low-pressure group settings centered around shared activities. These insights clarified that the core issue is not invisibility alone, but the absence of a safe, guided space where teens can connect naturally, feel seen, and build social confidence during free time.
